When you're pregnant, everyone has advice.
You'll hear "You HAVE to buy this!" from one person and "Don't waste your money!" from another. Before our daughter arrived, I spent countless hours reading reviews, scrolling TikTok, asking friends, and trying to figure out what products were actually worth it.
Now, as the mom of an almost one-month-old, I can confidently say something...
Babies really don't need much - besides a lot of snuggles and good milk.
BUT there are a handful of products that have made those middle-of-the-night feedings, contact naps, diaper changes, and sleepless weeks so much easier. These are the items we've reached for every single day—not because someone on the internet told us to, but because they've genuinely made life with a newborn better.
If you're building your baby registry or wondering what newborn essentials are actually worth buying, here's my honest list.
1. A Baby Wrap or Carrier
I knew babies liked to be held. I just didn't realize they wanted to be held...all. the. time. (Cue the little baby who wakes up immediately after being put down.)
A comfortable baby carrier has been an absolute lifesaver. Whether I'm trying to make lunch, update the online shop, fold laundry (or just convince myself I'm being productive), wearing our daughter keeps her happy while giving me two free hands.
Why we love it:
- Keeps baby calm and close
- Frees up your hands
- Great for walks or getting things done around the house
- Helps soothe a fussy newborn
This was our choice - the Solly Baby Wrap! It is safe enough for newborns but also strong enough to grow with them! Plus, the green just fit our vibes!
2. A Sound Machine
I underestimated this one.
The sound machine has become part of our bedtime routine and even our daytime naps. The gentle white noise helps drown out barking dogs, doorbells, and whatever chaos is happening around the house.
Why it's worth it:
- Encourages better sleep
- Creates a consistent sleep environment
- Portable enough to take anywhere
This was our choice - HATCH Baby - and, as an added bonus, it comes with a stationary and travel version. The travel version has been a life saver for doctor appointments or traveling! Just hook it on the car seat handle and go.
3. A Quality Swaddle
Some babies love being swaddled. Some absolutely hate it.
Fortunately, ours falls into the first category, and a good swaddle has helped everyone get a little more sleep. (It also comes in handy when giving them a bath - you can use this to soak and keep their body warm while you wash the rest.)
Finding one that's easy to use (especially at 2:00 a.m.) is worth every penny. Here's our go to muslin swaddle - especially since it has multiple uses! (P.S. You can get these just about anywhere, but be sure to check the quality....we found some crappy ones that just didn't pass the test on comfort or longevity.)
4. More Burp Cloths Than You Think You Need
Then double that amount. I thought buying a dozen burp cloths would be excessive. It wasn't.
They end up everywhere—next to the couch, in the nursery, the diaper bag, the car, and somehow every room in the house.
You truly can't have too many. Here's a link to a pack of the ones we reach for regularly that are available on Amazon.
5. A Portable Changing Caddy
One thing nobody told me? You don't always make it to the nursery. (We've been pooped on multiple times already...)
Having diapers, wipes, diaper cream, extra clothes, burp cloths, and pacifiers in a portable caddy has saved us countless trips across the house. Having everything within arm's reach was a game changer.
6. A Reliable Baby Monitor
Even when she's only napping a few feet away, having a baby monitor gives us peace of mind.
Whether I'm folding laundry, grabbing a shower, or simply enjoying a hot cup of coffee (before it gets cold), it's reassuring to be able to check on her without constantly peeking into the nursery.
We chose the Nanit - yes, it's wifi, but it's secure and you can buy a separate screen that stays with the system so that a babysitter or family member can use it without having to log into your account. It also records special moments. This was a win for us!
7. Diaper Cream (Before You Think You Need It)
One of the biggest surprises? How quickly diaper rash can show up - like within a week. Keeping a good, healthy diaper cream within reach and using it proactively has made a huge difference.
This was our choice - Flander's - great ingredients, helpful, and something that actually works. Thanks to an amazing family friend for getting it for us!
What We Didn't Need (Yet)
One thing we've learned during these first few weeks?
You don't have to buy everything before your baby arrives.
Some products have barely been touched, while others quickly became everyday essentials. Every baby is different, and what works for one family might not work for another.
It's okay to wait and see what your little one actually likes before filling your house with baby gear.
Final Thoughts From a First-Time Mom
If there's one thing motherhood has already taught me, it's that perfection doesn't exist.
Some days we've felt like we've got it figured out. Other days we're celebrating that everyone is fed, changed, and somehow managed to get a little sleep.
And that's enough.
These products haven't made parenting easy—but they've definitely made it easier.
If you're preparing for your own little one, take a deep breath. You don't need every trending gadget on social media. Your baby won't remember which bassinet they slept in or which swaddle brand you bought.
They'll remember being loved.
Everything else is just there to help you along the way.
